Magenta Theater: Auditions August 11, 2008
"Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring.
Directed by Darren Walker.
Mortimer Brewster is a renowned theater critic with a promising future and a lovely new fiancée. One day he visits his elderly aunts, Martha and Abby, only to discover they have a bad habit of poisoning lonely, old men with elderberry wine to ease their suffering. Mortimer’s brother, who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, aids his kindly aunts by burying their “guests” in the basement where he is digging the “Panama Canal.” With the unexpected arrival of Mortimer’s devious and slightly homicidal other brother, Jonathan, and his estranged doctor, things take a turn for the worse. Can Mortimer outwit Jonathan, maintain his engagement, keep the police from finding the truth, and figure out what to do with the body in the window-seat before it’s too late?
Arsenic and Old Lace is a wonderful comedy sure to please all!
