The 16th Season of the Bravo! Vancouver Concert Series continues with a concert on Sunday, January 24th at 2:00 PM with a performance of two very different pieces of music: Ludwig van Beethoven's famous Piano Quintet and Chris Brubeck's classical/jazz crossover piece Vignettes for Nonet. The concert will feature nine Pacific Northwest musicians for the jazz-meets-classical crossover concert. Well-know Portland jazz musicians Dave Captein (bass), Chris Woitach (guitar) and Alan Tarpinian (drums) join Maria Manzo (piano), Michael Kissinger (clarinet), Mitch Iimori (oboe), Annie Kosanovich-Brown (bassoon), Rebecca Olson (flute) and Daniel Partridge (horn) for this concert, which stretches from the classical titan Beethoven to the American jazz musician Chris Brubeck. Tickets are $20 for Reserved or General Admission seats. Tickets are available at www.bravoconcerts.com OR the Bravo! Box Office at 360-906-0441 OR www.ticketswest.com. The concert will be held at St. Joseph Church in Vancouver, Washington, 400 S. Andresen Road.
Christopher Brubeck is internationally recognized not only as a jazz trombone and bass player, but also as a composer of music which links the genres of classical and jazz music. "Chris is not only a brilliant performer, he is an accomplished composer" says Michael Kissinger, Bravo! Vancouver Artistic Director. We've had the Brubeck Brothers at the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival in 2008 and the audience loved them. So we're really looking forward to performing Chris' Vignettes for Nonet. It's such a cool piece, and I'm sure the audience will really enjoy it" Kissinger added. Chris Brubeck's father-jazz musician Dave Brubeck-was recently awarded a Kennedy Center Honors award on December 6, 2009. The Brubeck Brothers appeared as surprise "guest artists" at the Kennedy Center awards ceremony to help honor their famous jazz Dad. One of Chris Brubeck's most recent pieces was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Interplay for 3 Violins and Orchestra. It was premiered by the BSO with violinists Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (classical), Eileen Ivers (Irish) and Regina Carter (jazz). The respected music critic for The Chicago Tribune, John von Rhein calls Chris Brubeck "a composer with a real flair for lyrical melody--a 21st Century Lenny Bernstein." Also on the program is Beethoven's Piano Quintet, scored for piano, clarinet, flute, oboe, horn and bassoon. Known as a virtuosic pianist himself, Beethoven wrote a technically difficult-but beautiful piano piece with supporting roles for the woodwind quintet. "This concert will be a technical challenge for all the musicians, but it's great music, and it's music that most people will not have heard in live concert, especially Chris Brubeck's music" says Maria Manzo, piano soloist.
Bravo! Vancouver Concert Series is Southwest Washington's professional series featuring classical, jazz, sacred and chamber music programs. The season begins each year in December with the annual production of Handel's Messiah, and extends with concerts through June of 2010. The season includes concerts featuring the Bravo! Vancouver Chorale, Washington Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Jazz Orchestra and guest soloists. For information about this concert visit www.bravoconcerts.com or call 360-906-0441. Tickets are also available at the door. For directions, call St. Joseph Church at 360-696-4407.
