Requiems of Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
From the Renaissance through the 20th century, Western composers have written musical settings of the Requiem Mass (Mass for the Dead). The most recognized settings include those by W.A. Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, and Johannes Brahms, among others. The Bravo! Vancouver Chorale & Washington Chamber Orchestra will perform two of the most famous 20th century versions of the Requiem Mass by French composers Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) and Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) on Sunday, April 5th at 3:00 PM. The concert takes place at St. Joseph Church, 400 S. Andresen Road, Vancouver 98661. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
The Requiems of these two French composers are very reflective and introspective, and they represent a beautiful, peaceful-even poetic approach to death, rather than the fearful or sorrowful view of death that is often depicted by other composers” says Dr. Maria Manzo, Music Director. “Fauré even referred to his Requiem as a ‘lullaby of death’ so he uses a lot of rocking motion in his music, like a lullaby, and you can hear that style especially in the ‘Libera Me’ or ‘Deliver Me, O Lord’. Fauré thought of dying as a peaceful transition, rather than a sad, mournful experience, and his music expresses that philosophy.” Both composers were church organists, so their orchestrations include organ as a solo instrument. While most composer’s Requiem settings are concert versions, Fauré’s Requiem (composed 1887-88, and revised in 1890) could actually be used within a church service; and in fact it was performed at his own funeral mass and was also performed at the funeral of Fr. Michael Judge after 9/11 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City (Fr. Judge was the Chaplain for the New York Fire Department, and was killed during 9/11). Duruflé’s Requiem (composed in 1947) incorporates ancient Gregorian Chant melodies-but he arranged these melodies in an impressionistic style, with modern harmonies. Duruflé used Fauré’s setting as the inspiration for his own version of the Requiem, and dedicated his music to the memory of his father. =0D=0A=
