Bravo! Vancouver Presents:
Requiems of Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Duruflé

From the Renaissance through the 20th century, Western composers have written musical settings of the Requiem Mass (Mass for the Dead). The most recognized settings include those by W.A. Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, and Johannes Brahms, among others. The Bravo! Vancouver Chorale & Washington Chamber Orchestra will perform two of the most famous 20th century versions of the Requiem Mass by French composers Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) and Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) on Sunday, April 5th at 3:00 PM. The concert takes place at St. Joseph Church, 400 S. Andresen Road, Vancouver 98661.

The Requiems of these two French composers are very reflective and introspective, and they represent a beautiful, peaceful-even poetic approach to death, rather than the fearful or sorrowful view of death that is often depicted by other composers" says Dr. Maria Manzo, Music Director. "Fauré even referred to his Requiem as a 'lullaby of death' so he uses a lot of rocking motion in his music, like a lullaby, and you can hear that style especially in the 'Libera Me' or 'Deliver Me, O Lord'. Fauré thought of dying as a peaceful transition, rather than a sad, mournful experience, and his music expresses that philosophy." Both composers were church organists, so their orchestrations include organ as a solo instrument. While most composer's Requiem settings are concert versions, Fauré's Requiem (composed 1887-88, and revised in 1890) could actually be used within a church service; and in fact it was performed at his own funeral mass and was also performed at the funeral of Fr. Michael Judge after 9/11 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City (Fr. Judge was the Chaplain for the New York Fire Department, and was killed during 9/11). Duruflé's Requiem (composed in 1947) incorporates ancient Gregorian Chant melodies-but he arranged these melodies in an impressionistic style, with modern harmonies. Duruflé used Fauré's setting as the inspiration for his own version of the Requiem, and dedicated his music to the memory of his father.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating and may be purchased at www.bravoconcerts.com or the Bravo! Box Office: 360-906-0441; TicketsWest at 1-800-992-8499 or www.ticketswest.com. Now in its 15th concert season, Bravo! Vancouver presents an annual concert series and produces the annual Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival, recognized as "…the largest festival of its kind in the Northwest…" (KATU Channel 2, Portland, Oregon). The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will present a powerful program which includes performances by three winners of its Young Artists Competition when it continues its 30 Year celebration season Saturday, April 18 at 3 pm and Sunday, April 19 at 7 pm.

Our annual Young Artists program features three talented young performers, selected by audition earlier this spring. Featured in the first half will be first-place winners-violinist Kelly Talim, a seventh grader at Whitford Middle School in Portland, pianist Stephanie Cai, a seventh grader at Waluga Jr. High School in Lake Oswego and alto saxophonist Ted Schaller, a senior at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego. The remainder of the program is comprised of the music of Richard Wagner, with instrumental excerpts from four of his operas: Tristan und Isolde, Die Meistersinger, Götterdämmerung, and Die Walküre.

The 15th Annual Young Artists Competition attracted fifty-three applicants playing eleven different instruments from Washington and Oregon. Judging of applicants (all under the age of 18) was done by three professional musicians, with the three top finishers in the categories of piano, strings and percussion/woodwinds/brass winning scholarships and performing with accompanist before an audience on February 22 at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics' Royal Durst Theatre.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is a 70-member professional orchestra presenting outstanding guest artists and varied programs September through May in a seven-concert season.

Preceding Saturday's concert, enjoy "Opening Notes." This lively and informative talk about the music and composers begins at 2 pm on Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday. All performances are at Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th Street, Vancouver. Tickets for performances are available by phone at (360) 735-7278, at local outlets and at the door. Students get a special $7 admission price for any concert. Steel Magnolias
The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin,
Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to
have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant,
Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses
shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon -
Ouiser, the eccentric millionaire - Miss Clairee, and the local
social leader - M'Lynn, whose daughter Shelby is about to
marry a "good-ole boy."

Filled with hilarious repartee and a few acerbic but
humorously revealing verbal collisions. A funny and
marvelously amiable group of characters.

Best enjoyed by ages 10 and over.
