DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:VANCOUVER SYMPHONY OFFERS TASTY CONCERT CONFECTION FEBRUARY 14 & 15 =0D=0A=
Music from Brahms, Stravinsky and Oltra highlight romantic program with Oregon Repertory Singers =0D=0A=
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra offers up a sweet Valentine’s Day treat when it continues its 30 Year Celebration season Saturday, February 14 at 3 pm and Sunday, February 15 at 7 pm with a program featuring the Oregon Repertory Singers. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
The VSO’s violin section will be missing as this program brings together three works that do not call for them; and the violas will also step away for the last two works. Maestro Salvador Brotons, now in his 18th season as music director and conductor, opens with one of the finest early works of Brahms, the sunny second serenade. The stirring language of the Latin Psalms inspired our two final works. The Oregon Repertory Singers, under the direction of Gil Seeley joins us for a rare American performance of Catalan composer Manuel Oltra’s Psalmus Brevis, a setting of the exuberant Psalm 96. We close with Stravinsky’s neoclassical Symphony of Psalms.=0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is a 70-member professional orchestra presenting outstanding guest artists and varied programs September through May in a seven-concert season. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Now in their 35th season, The Oregon Repertory Singers (ORS) is a sixty-member group recognized and respected internationally and locally as being an innovative choral music organization. ORS has performed throughout the world in concert and in competitions, and with many regional arts organizations, and performs a wide variety of works from all time periods and languages, with a special emphasis placed on contemporary music of the Americas. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Preceding Saturday’s concert, enjoy “Opening Notes.” This lively and informative talk about the music and composers begins at 2 pm on Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday. All performances are at Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th Street, Vancouver. Tickets for performances are available by phone at (360) 735-7278, at local outlets and at the door. Students get a special $7 admission price for any concert. For more information, visit our web site at http://www.vancouversymphony.org. =0D=0A=
In recognition of Black History Month, the Bravo! Vancouver Chorale & Washington Chamber Orchestra present “Celebrating the Roots of American Music” on Sunday, February 22 at 3:00 PM. The concert takes place at St. Joseph Church, 400 S. Andresen Road, Vancouver 98661. The concert features the Chorale and orchestra performing classic Negro Spirituals; American folk & hymns; and a performance of William Grant Still’s Afro-American Symphony. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
“The Negro Spiritual has played a vital and important role in the development of American music-it is really the root from which folk, blues, sacred hymns, gospel, jazz and rock music have grown,” says Dr. Maria Manzo, Conductor and Music Director. And like all great music, Spirituals speak to us-no matter what our faith or ethnic background. The Chorale & Orchestra will perform Spirituals & from the past and present, including: Ezekiel Saw De’ Wheel and Aina That Good News by William Dawson; In Dat Great Gittin’ Up Mornin’ Jester Hairston; Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing and Shenandoah arranged by Mormon Tabernacle Choir Director Mack Wilberg; Hear My Prayer by Moses Hogan; and Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho; I Got a Robe; and Ev’ry Time I Feel The Spirit, arranged by John Rutter. The Orchestra will also perform William Grant Still's (1895-1978) Afro-American Symphony, the first symphony written by an African-American composer now considered a “new classic” of the 20th century. Grant Still is now considered the “Dean” of African-American composers. “This is an important ‘watershed’ piece. Not only is it the first symphony composed by an African-American composer, it also incorporates the use of blues and folk music-and it evokes the musical style found in spirituals. William Grant Still took the European classical form-the symphony-and made it uniquely American,” says Dr. Michael Kissinger, Artistic Director. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Tickets are $20 for reserved seating and may be purchased at www.bravoconcerts.com or the Bravo! Box Office: 360-906-0441; TicketsWest at 1-800-992-8499 or www.ticketswest.com. Now in its 15th concert season, Bravo! Vancouver presents an annual concert series and produces the annual Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival, recognized as “…the largest festival of its kind in the Northwest…” (KATU Channel 2, Portland, Oregon).
