DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:SHOSTAKOVICH SYMPHONY NO. 10 AND CONCERT FOR FLUTE AND ORCHESTRA BY NIELSEN =0D=0A=
HIGHLIGHT VANCOUVER SYMPHONY JANUARY CONCERT =0D=0A=
Portland flutist Dawn Weiss is first guest artist of 2009 =0D=0A=
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra continues its 30 Year Celebration season Saturday, January 17 at 3 pm and Sunday, January 18 at 7 pm with a spectacular program highlighted by the talents of flutist Dawn Weiss. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Maestro Salvador Brotons, now in his 18th season as music director and conductor, will lead The VSO through a program that brings together two works of varying textures: Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Carl Nielsen and Symphony No.10 in E minor, Op. 93 by Dmitri Shostakovich. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Flutist Dawn Weiss is the soloist for Nielsen’s Flute Concerto, a work filled with good humor, and solo turns for most of The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s principal players. Though it also has flashes of humor, Shostakovich’s piece is much more serious business, and seems to be filled with emotions provoked by the death of Stalin in 1953. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Dawn Weiss is an accomplished musician of great depth, richness and spirit. Principal Flutist for the Oregon Symphony Orchestra for 25 years, she continues to solo with many orchestras, and performs solo and ensemble recitals nationally and internationally. She’s won prestigious competitions and has released a critically- acclaimed album. Former Principal Flutist of the Mexico State Symphony orchestra and former member of the Miami Philharmonic, she teaches all levels. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is a 70-member professional orchestra presenting outstanding guest artists and varied programs September through May in a seven-concert season. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
Preceding Saturday’s concert, enjoy “Opening Notes.” This lively and informative talk about the music and composers begins at 2 pm on Saturday and 6 pm on Sunday. All performances are at Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 NW 139th Street, Vancouver. Tickets for performances are available by phone at (360) 735-7278, at local outlets and at the door. SUMMARY:WSU Vancouver Presents Heather Raffo’s '9 Parts of Desire'
TRANSP:0
UID:090123062891192189070735454135
URL:http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/ss/diversity/9parts.html
LOCATION:WSU Vancouver - Administration building, room 110
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Vancouver, Wash. - Washington State University Vancouver hosts playwright Heather Raffo's, "9 Parts of Desire" one night only, at 6 p.m. Jan. 28, in the Administration building, room 110. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the Public, seating is limited. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
"9 Parts of Desire," starring Luisa Sermol and directed by Louanne Moldovan, is a portrait of the extraordinary (and ordinary) lives of a whole cross-section of Iraqi women: a sexy painter, a radical communist, doctors, exiles, wives and lovers. This work delves into the many conflicting aspects of what it means to be a woman in the age-old war zone in Iraq. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
"When I was in the Saddam Art Center in Baghdad, I saw a haunting painting of a nude woman clinging to a barren tree. I came back to America and over the last ten years have been digesting this painting and what it must mean to be an Iraqi woman now," said Raffo. =0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
In "9 Parts of Desire," Raffo weaves a tapestry of love, longing, sorrow and wit, illustrating the complex and harrowing reality of living in modern Iraq.=0D=0A=
 =0D=0A=
This is an unusually timely meditation on the ancient, the modern and the feminine in a country overshadowed by war. Note: This play is appropriate for ages 14 and up. Parking is available in the Blue Lot for $3.=0D=0A=
