DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:GLIERE HARP CONCERTO AND KALINNIKOV SYMPHONY NO. 1 HIGHLIGHT VSO CONCERT FEBRUARY 20 & 21, 2010 =0D=0A=
Seattle Harpist Catherine Barrett is guest artist=0D=0A=
(Vancouver, WA) The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra proudly announces its fourth concerts of the season on Saturday, February 20 at 3 pm and Sunday, February 21 at 7 pm. The mostly-Russian music concert is highlighted by the appearance of guest artist Catherine Barrett, harp playing Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in E-flat Major, Op.74 by Gliere. Also on the program is Elegy by Feigin and Symphony No. 1 in G minor by Kalinnikov.=0D=0A=
The concert opens with a lush contemporary work by California-based composer Joel Feigin and the remainder of the program is taken up with a pair of rarely-heard Russian works: Gliere’s Harp Concerto, a richly Romantic work that makes the most of the harp’s ethereal sweetness and the exuberant Symphony No.1 by Kalinnikov-a testament to the power of a composer whose life was cut far too short.=0D=0A=
Harpist Catherine Barrett has performed widely across the United States and abroad, both as a soloist and orchestral musician. Most recently, Ms. Barrett served as principal harpist with the Sarasota Orchestra. She has also held positions with the Yucatan Symphony in Mexico, Singapore Symphony, and Dayton Philharmonic. From 2005-2006 Catherine was assistant principal harp with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra in Brazil. Based in Seattle, Ms. Barrett received degrees in harp performance from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Rice University. =0D=0A=
Maestro Salvador Brotons is in his nineteenth season as music director and conductor of The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Conductor and Music Director of the Vallès Symphony Orchestra in his native Barcelona and the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra in Palma de Mallorca. =0D=0A=
